Question #1:

Can anyone here explain to me how to pay for college?

I am thinking of going back to school, but the tuition is too high. I want to apply for financial aid, but one of the schools I was interested in told me that I don't qualify because of my income . How can that be when I am in the low income category? So do I qualify for any grants or do i forget about my dreams of having a career?

Question #2:

Why am I not getting all the money I was awarded in my student refund?

Ok I applied for student aid and I qualified for the Pell grant this year and a loan. I know they split the money up between semesters but for this semester (Fall 10-11) it said I qualified for $2.7k from the pell grant and $1.7k from the loan. Tuition was only $1.7k and I only needed to get one new book which cost $100. Today I checked my balance and it said I only have $900. : /

Question #3:

Are there grants for people like me who want to teach?

I want to teach either kindergarten or elementary school and I was wondering if there are grants out there that will pay off my college education entirely.I need to know because I'm applying for online classes to Towson for the Spring semester and I really need a way to pay off my college completely.
Any links would be appreciated, same with advice.

Question #4:

Question #5:

Do I have the right amout of safety/backup/reach schools?

Hi! I'm a senior in high school and I got a 32 on the ACT and I have a 3.75 gpa unweighted and 4.17 gpa weighted. I took quite a few honors classes, and I will have taken 4 AP classes. (I got all 4s on my previous AP tests)
I've been in quite a few clubs including Key Club, a club assisting special education classes, I'm in Spanish NHS, I volunteer at a hospital once a week, and I play Varsity Softball.

Anyway, these are the schools I am planning on applying to:
USC, UCLA, University of Virginia, University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and University of Alabama.

My first choice is USC, but close behind are UCLA and Virginia. I would rather go to these schools, but I would still be thrilled if I got into Chicago.
Wisconsin-Madison is a school that I would be happy at, it's kind of close to home, and it's still a good school. I'm confident that I could get in.
I'm applying to Alabama because I know that with my grades and ACT score, I'm guaranteed 4 years full tuition. So basically, I could go there for free, and I'm pretty positive that I will get in. So Alabama's my safety school.

So does this seem like a good plan? Do you guys think that I could get into USC, UCLA, Virginia, or Chicago? (I'm not sure which one is the most exclusive)

By the way, I live in Chicago, if that makes a difference. And my family is middle class, so we would struggle a bit, but potentially we can pay tuition for these schools. (I'm hoping that I can get grants and scholarships though.)

Question #6:

What are the steps for my child to go from high school to college?

My son is a senior this year and plans on going to college next fall. He is looking at a two year college with a culinary program. (my thinking was do a two year and make sure that is really what he wants to do.) He is the first one in our family to go to college and I am at a loss on what to do first. Should he take his act first? Also when should he apply to college and when should he start applying for scholarships and grants etc? It seems there is a lot that needs to be finished before this time next year I am just at a loss on what should be done when. Thanks for any help.
Another question,, which should he take, the ACT or SAT? What is the difference between them?

Question #7:

Do you apply for grants while applying for that college OR after you get accepted into that college?

Question #8:

My husband was granted a certificate of rehabilitation but can he possess a firearm . . .?

My husband was a drug addict many years ago & made some very poor choices that left him with 5 felonies. He has been clean for 10 yrs now. He applied for (and was granted) a cert of rehabilitation after several court appearances. The judge also recommended that the Governor issue him a Pardon. He did this because he couldn't get his record expunged. He had felonies & several of them so this was his only option in an attempt to clear his record. My question is . . . can he possess a firearm? It says he was granted the cert with no limitations. So does that mean he can own & operate a firearm? I have several guns & would like for us to go shooting together, etc. but I'm not sure if this is legal for him to do or even legal for me to have guns in my house with a felon. I'm just confused & it's extremely hard getting anyone to so much as answer the phone at the court. Thanks for your input!!!!
Forgot to mention we live in CA so we need the Terminator to issue a pardon on his way out LOL!!

Question #10:

How can I get help paying for my Pug's surgery?

My Pug has a corneal ulcer that is very very bad. He needs a graft over his eye to save it, but the estimate for the surgery is almost $3,000. I do not have any money in savings, as it takes every dime I make to stay afloat. I do not qualify for credit to pay, I have no credit cards of any kind, nothing of value to sale, I don't have any family to borrow from. I know that I cannot afford to have that surgery done, so I know I'm going to have to take the less expensive option of just have the eye removed altogether, which is just horrible to me because even though the ulcer is so bad and his eye has ruptured, he still has vision. He's my baby and I'm so upset... Since the ulcer came about 2 weeks ago today, it's cost about $1,000. I'm out of money but I love my dog. So can anybody suggest some kind of help? Is there some kind of charity or grant I could apply for? Or does somebody know if there is somebody that could do the surgery cheaper? I just don't know, I'm at a loss and the days are getting very critical.

Question #11:

Can police legally search a car in a school parking lot? Please, no high school kids repeating the teachers.?

School administration tells us that they can, but they may be lying. I am looking for an answer from someone who has legal experience. I personally believe that the police and administration are indeed lying when they say that they can search my car simply because it is on school grounds. Is it not public property? Can the administrator of the road commission grant permission to search a vehicle stopped on a public street? NO! Why is this different? Why would I be denied my right to refuse a search because my car is in the school lot? Does the 4th amendment only apply out of school? I call bull-excrement!

Question #12:

Should I borrow $12,000 for college this year?

I live on my own due to an abusive home situation. No connections to family nor relatives.
I am a college junior at 20 years old. I rent a room in a house with utilities, cable, high speed internet & furniture for $450 & cell phone bill is $55 a month.

I worked 2 jobs making about $670 a month so that left enough money for food, gas (50 a month), plus necessities while still saving at least $20 in savings.

They are cutting back at both jobs, I will only have one job. I can only earn about $400 a month! I am going to college full-time and would normally receive $ from scholarships/grants to buy textbooks, but I will not be receiving any. My Marketing classes are expensive as a junior, and so are my graphic design classes.

I plan to apply for scholarships through fastweb, I am not relying on it. In the mean time, I have subsidized students loans I can take out. I already have over $6,000 in the bank and will take out another $6G this year. I have the opportunity to go to school full-time and have my tuition covered, while working for up to $400 a month, or I can go to school full-time, do an unpaid internship while working an office job making $200 a month but living on loans.

The unpaid internship is something I am looking into because the company does EVERYTHING I am studying for, plus they are looking to hire someone, and possibly after graduation as long as they can test the student out in an unpaid internship to see if they are worthy. What should I do?

Question #17:

Should we grant free college educations U. students seek DREAM Act passage?

SALT LAKE CITY — Illegal-immigrant students at the University of Utah called Friday for the state's senators to help pass the DREAM Act this year, which would allow children of illegal-immigrant parents a pathway to citizenship by attending college.

"These young people are Americans in every way but their citizenship, and it helps no one to keep them undocumented," said Karen Crompton, executive director of Voices for Utah Children at a press conference and rally at the university.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act applies to children of illegal-immigrant parents who entered the country before age 16.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, first introduced a version of the bill in 2001 — saying most of the young people it would help had no choice on whether to enter the country illegally. Many do not remember their home countries. Hatch was attacked at the time by many fellow Republicans who said the proposal would create an amnesty program, and potentially attract more illegal immigrants to come here.

The DREAM Act has changed over the years, and Hatch is no longer a co-sponsor of it. Hatch declined repeated requests for an interview.

Students at the rally on Friday held signs asking Hatch and Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, to pass the bill now."It is time to pass the DREAM Act. It is time for our generation to take responsibility for all of America's children — whether they were born here or came in innocence," said Theresa Martinez, a sociology professor at the university.

Question #18:

Student loan question..help meh!?

Now that student loans are through gov't.. Im a lil thrown off. I usually go through Sallie Mae and get my loans, but now I have to go through my school. Are you guaranteed a loan if you apply? I got 7350 in grants and such, but that doesn't go far for two semesters. I usually have excess aid to help pay finances, etc.. Here's my thing, I didnt realize that it changed this year. I had already applied and was guaranteed a loan through Sallie Mae, now I cant have that loan. I realized two weeks before school started I had to apply through the school, which I did. I still have heard NOTHING and its making me a nervous wreck! I am the only one working in the household (im 34 with two babies and a hubby trying to find work), and I NEED this loan..
So my question is: is a stafford loan guaranteed? or can they turn me down???
edit: gee sonja, way to NOT answer my question.

I dont need solicitations, bad ones at that. I need an answer about my gov't student loan.
edit: with the exception of Abby (thank you for not wasting my time).. i get the feeling there are a bunch of moronic losers trolling here. I DONT WANT YOUR SOLICITATIONS! I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU GRACIOUSLY WANT TO GIVE ME MONEY! AND SAYING JESUS AMEN DOESNT MAKE YOU ANY MORE CREDIBLE!
ok, off my soapbox now.

Thanks Abby, for being the only sane one of the bunch.

Question #19:

Question about the Pell Grant?

I was awarded a full Pell Grant for $5,550. My questions are this: Is that just for 1 semester or a whole year? Also, do I have to re-apply every semester? One more thing: will the college put that full amount into their fund or will they only award enough to cover college expenses, as $5,550 is way more than I need for a semester. Thanks in advance!

Question #20:

What is he able to sue me for?

Just under a year ago, this guy from my school (he turned 18 this July) thought it'd be fun to discriminate against me by pretending to be gay, asking me to do things with him, and basically harass me so I would admit to being gay. I played along with him cause I thought he may be gay, and since I'm not, I didn't want to hurt his feelings.

We then spoke on msn one day and I said "I regret how things left off between us" cause I genuinely thought he was an okay guy. At that point, he started acting all weird again and so I told him that I am going to expose him for harassing me on Facebook by sharing our conversations in a note. I messaged him through Facebook inbox about 3 times so he would stop.

Later, I get a message from him saying that he has spoken to his lawyer and he is going to sue me because I have made fake accounts on Facebook (totally untrue), threatened him, harassed him, and discriminated. He also said I violated section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

"15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."

As far as I know, this particular section of the Charter doesn't apply to me as it's directed towards government bodies or an employer who has discriminated you and as a result, you have lost pay.

So at this point, I'm feeling confident that he doesn't have a lawyer because no lawyer would tell him he could sue me with that section of the Charter. However, my friend recently called him (a month after I received a message saying he wanted to sue me) and he told my friend that he is serious and isn't going to back out of the case because he will lose too much money.

At this point, I am worried as hell. I am a minor - he'd have to go for my parents. As well, I don't see how there is any money involved here for him to sue me for. He doesn't suffer from any depression and it's not like he is on meds cause of this.

Can he sue me?

ALSO: In the first message he sent me where he said he wanted to sue me, he said....

"im not worried at all bud. everyone's looking to sue out there...and when opportunities come by why not take them for granted. take care:)"

I have the email saved and I believe this will prove that he is out to sue for the wrong reasons - even revenge - as he isn't suffering from my actions. So what the hell can he sue for - I never posted anything!
